Series: Acts 29 Stories

During our 2019 Network Conference, a number of our church planting couples shared their story and where God has been at work in their lives and church. One of these was Jake & Kathy Swadling from Anchor Church, Port Adelaide.

We caught up with Jake & Kathy this month to hear a little more of their story and how we can be praying for them, their church and Port Adelaide.

What is the vision for Anchor Church Port Adelaide?
We believe that the church is how God is primarily advancing His Kingdom on earth. We long to see God continue to grow His church in Port Adelaide. Our vision is to see the glory of Ephesians 3:10 [so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.] be lived out here in the Port—people from all backgrounds unified in their worship of Jesus Christ!

How was Anchor Church Port Adelaide planted?
In mid-2017 a small core group of people were sent out from CityLight Glenelg into what has been a traditionally rough part of Adelaide. We began our Sunday gatherings in a Navy Bar after it closed in the afternoon. We didn’t have constant use of the place, and at one stage (over 6 weeks) met in 5 different locations such as alleys, backyards and under a jetty! Since then, the Lord has provided us with an old warehouse to meet in. It has been a faith step, and we will soon be opening part of it as a Second-Hand clothing shop to connect with the local community and help pay the rent.

What drew your interest into Acts 29 initially & what made you want to become members?
The doctrinal distinctives played a big role, we agree that it is important to read the Bible the same as the people you serve alongside. We also wanted to be part of a movement that is passionate about planting churches! We interact with a number of parachurch ministries inside the prison system, and not everybody in these areas understands the central importance of the Gospel and the Church in reaching the lost. Acts 29 understands that it’s all about Jesus and that the church is His primary way of building His kingdom.

Where are you seeing God at work in Anchor Church, Port Adelaide as a whole & how can we be praying for the church?
We are starting to see real fruit emerging from our Prison ministry. Our Second-Hand clothing shop is about to open, the community debt centre (CAP) is meeting new clients and we are starting to see more baptisms! It’s an exciting time…but it’s been hard work. Please pray that the team doesn’t fatigue and that we can continue to reach the lost in Port Adelaide with the Gospel!

Join with us in praying for the Swadlings and Anchor Church!
