Series: Acts 29 Stories

What a joy it has been sharing with you the journey of church planters from around Acts 29 Australia & New Zealand this year!

For the final feature of 2018 we’d like to introduce you to Don & Bek who planted CityLight Church in Adelaide, South Australia.

“CityLight Adelaide is a family of Churches made up of Jesus followers from all over Adelaide. Since our launch in December 2012, we have witnessed a grace-filled work of God as He has drawn hundreds of women and men around His mission to

“Missionally Engage Culture with the Gospel of Jesus

Make Disciple-making Disciples

Train Leader-raising Leaders

& Multiply Communities”

CityLight launched in 2012 with a core team of 12 people. We gathered midweek in discipleship groups and together on a Sunday in hall at our local retirement centre. As a core team, there were two particular scriptures we held at the forefront of all we did, the first Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” The second was John 13:34-35 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” These two scriptures are still a core part of our values as a church.

Bek and I had heard about the Acts 29 Network and were eager to take steps to become members from the moment we started to think about planting a church. The calibre of people and churches involved, the theological distinctives, the robust assessment process; all of it has benefitted us the whole way from planning through launching, and even more so over the last 6 years as the church has grown and matured into a church planting church.

Over the past 6 years God has been at work in our church, we started out as a small core group of young adults and our church has grown into a demographically, socio-economically, ethnically diverse church; invested in local and global missions. We have planted churches in Glenelg, North Adelaide, and Port Adelaide; and we’re praying for a planter to lead a plant in Adelaide’s South. By God’s grace, we’ve launched dozens of Discipleship Groups, seen believers mature in the likeness of Christ, and witnessed many give their life to Jesus for the first time.

Across Adelaide, across denominations and networks, God seems to be doing something in church planting and Gospel fruitfulness that hasn’t been seen in a long time. It’s a privilege to be a part of it! Please pray for effectiveness in mission, unity among the churches, more labourers for the work (especially Discipleship Group leaders and church planters), continued Gospel clarity, and love to be our mark.”

Join with us in praying for Don & Bek and CityLight Church!
