Acts 29 Australia & New Zealand continues to grow with churches planting churches around our part of the world!
This month we spoke to Anthony and his wife Ellen about how God has been at work in their church, Redeemer Church Tauranga:
“Tauranga is one of the fastest growing cities in New Zealand, located on the east coast of the North Island. This strategic city serves as the central hub of the Bay of Plenty region.
Redeemer Church exists to see lives redeemed and a city renewed by the gospel for the glory of God. We believe that as the good news of the person and work of Jesus transforms individual’s lives we will see gospel transformation across the city of Tauranga, the Bay of Plenty region, Aotearoa New Zealand and the world. Redeemer Church launched public services in April 2014 after a season of core group prayer gatherings in our home.
We were first introduced to Acts 29 in 2005 and was immediately struck by the theological rigour and gospel clarity of the network and it’s member churches. Like many churches in western countries, the church in Aotearoa New Zealand is often more concerned with what works instead of what is true; so hearing and seeing such conviction was incredibly appealing. My wife, Ellen and I had set our minds and hearts on serving and loving the local church and seeing new churches planted so as we watched Acts 29 foster and develop innovative, missional churches through 2005 – 2008 we decided we would apply for a church planting residency in the United States. To be a part of the church planting residency we had to go through the Acts 29 assessment process and at the end, the assessment panel encouraged us to plant. The thing that we have treasured the most has been the genuine love and concern we have experienced from the men and women in Acts 29.
We are seeing God at work in individuals and families in our city & church. A reoccurring story we hear is that of people who have grown up in a church or been involved in a church, but somewhere along the way had stopped. By some quirky work of providence, they heard about this little church in the middle of the city that was passionate about Jesus, opened the Bible a lot, and wanted to love their city well. To borrow the words of the OG (Original Gospeler) Tim Keller, we want to see sleepy Christians wake up, nominal Christians get converted, and non-Christians get reached. Redeemer is currently in the process of renovating an old automotive parts store into our new church building, which we are very excited about! There is no doubt that Jesus is building His church in Tauranga.”
