It seems like yesterday when we said goodbye to friends and family in KZN to relocate to Cape Town for Musa to study theology. Although he enjoyed being a Civil Engineer, Musa has always had the desire to plant Gospel-preaching churches in the townships and it felt great that he could finally study towards his ‘dream job’.

I believe that being a full-time preacher of God’s word is the best thing to do with your life, so I’ve made peace with the reality that we’ll probably move around for the Gospel. The transition, when he left his secular career to be a full-time student, felt a bit uncomfortable because it was the opposite of the traditional norms of ‘the husband works while the wife stays at home’.

The reality dawned on me when I realized that our families were concerned that he won’t be earning a salary for at least three years and I became comfortable with colleagues making the “So, you’re the breadwinner” comments. The reality is that his career in ministry is more important than my secular career. It was exciting to see him enjoying his studies and it was encouraging for him to be staying at the college, where everyone had goals towards church ministry.

I’m still not sure what people expect from a ‘pastor’s wife’, but I do know God expects all of us to set our mind and hearts on His Kingdom and be humble servants of all.

The opportunity to lead a Soweto church plant was not only a bit daunting, but also an answer to our prayers and the fulfilment of our heart’s desire. God, in His Sovereignty, surrounded us with people who are keen to serve and want to see the Gospel spread. We are still learning how to plant a church, but I’ve witnessed the growth in Musa as a leader and it’s very encouraging to see him do what he loves. Although I’m still in a full-time secular profession, I’ve learned to prioritize my Godliness and to ensure that I grow in the knowledge of Christ and in His likeness so that I can do the good works that God has prepared for me.

“to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21

I’m still not sure what people expect from a ‘pastor’s wife’, but I do know God expects all of us to set our mind and hearts on His Kingdom and be humble servants of all. That’s what I want to be. It’s been 10 months since we planted, and I’ve found my place of service within Christ Central Soweto and I praise God for this opportunity. For I believe that “to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21
