JOB DESCRIPTION
The Lead Pastor is responsible for shepherding the people of Redeemer Church of Arlington (Redeemer) and overseeing its ministries and staff. His primary duties will be to serve as the lead preaching and teaching elder, thereby “preparing God’s people for works of service (Ephesians 4:12).” The lead pastor’s character and gifts conform to the biblical qualifications presented in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, 1 Peter 5:1-4, and Acts 20.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Is known for his love for Jesus Christ, the Gospel, the Bible, and the local church and surrounding community.
- Demonstrates the fruit of the Spirit, continuous growth in his faith, and commitment to spiritual disciplines such as Bible reading, prayer, and rest.
- Shows spiritual maturity, character, and integrity consistent with the biblical requirements for pastoral leadership and eldership.
- Exhibits spiritual, emotional, relational, and physical health in life and ministry. Relational health includes, but is not limited to, healthy relationships across gender, race, and culture, within his family, and among ministry colleagues and mentors.
- Excellent communication skills, particularly verbal, but also written.
- Agrees with and is accountable to Redeemer’s Statement of Faith.
- Received education and training that has equipped him for vocational ministry in a fast-paced ministry context. A relevant advanced degree from an accredited seminary is preferred but not required.
- Has a track record of, including several years of experience, leading pastors, volunteers, and/or ministries through healthy ministry growth and progress.
- A teacher of teachers, a leader of leaders, a discipler of disciplers (2 Timothy 2:2).
- Proactively seeks to live a missional life, looking to see neighbors, friends, and family come to Christ and grow in Him.
- Characterized by a love for the lost.
- If married, has full and enthusiastic spousal support.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching and Preaching Leadership
- Provides clear, expositional preaching and teaching centered on and flowing from the life and work of Jesus Christ aligned with the essential doctrines of Redeemer.
- Preaches and teaches the whole counsel of God, desiring that His people be shaped by all of Scripture.
- Preaches and teaches with passion and compassion, connecting Scripture to a biblical worldview and specific application to all areas of life to all types of people.
- Is the “lead theologian” among the elders and a knowledgeable resource for Redeemer’s leaders, teachers, and members.
Vision and Direction Stewardship
- Deeply resonates and agrees with Redeemer’s Missional Framework and Statement of Faith.
- Develops and articulates ministry vision consistent with the needs of Redeemer’s initiatives.
- Supports the staff and elders in the implementation and execution of a long-term strategic plan through goals and objectives consistent with the vision of Redeemer.
Care, Community, and Ministry
- Able to provide and/or coordinate pastoral care, discipleship, and counseling to Redeemer members (1 Peter 5:1-3). Always actively discipling a few members in one-to-one or cohort contexts.
- Actively and regularly participates in the community of Redeemer, including a community group and Sunday gatherings.
- Cares for Redeemer members and our neighbors in the local community, including praying for and supporting the sick, elderly, hurting, non-participating, etc.
- Collaborates with the executive pastor to oversee church operations and ministries.
- Supports and advises leadership development, including the preparation or revision of job descriptions and planning for elder succession.
ACCOUNTABILITY
- The lead pastor is accountable to Redeemer’s elders.
- This position description will be reviewed annually by the elders.
