SEPTEMBER 10 (TRAVEL DAY DEVOTIONAL)

Before you leave home to travel to Orange County on September 10, please download the audio file below and set aside 30-45 minutes to listen to it on the plane or while you are driving. This guided devotional time is meant to help us each prepare, not just to accomplish tasks, but to grow in the Lord and engage in God’s Mission while we are together.

SEPTEMBER 11

Read:

Psalm 8:1-9, “1 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? 5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, 7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

Listen:

Shane & Shane singing Psalm 8

Think About:

Q: Look at how this Psalm begins and ends with “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” God is so glorious that his glory fills the earth and requires all of the universe to begin to put it on display. His glory and majesty are so great that they can’t be contained! How good is God that he would put his glory on display in so many ways in creation? As you look out at God’s beautiful creation from this beautiful spot, take some time to magnify his name and worship him.

Q: The psalmist stands in awe of the works of God’s fingers in creation. Where have you seen the fingerprints of God’s work in your own life recently? Where have you seen God moving in through the work of your hands with Acts 29? Where have you seen God at work in other staff members in Acts 29? Take a minute to stand in awe of God for these and thank God for them. Then take a minute and text/ slack someone on staff where you have seen God at work through them and how you praise God for it.

Q: Verse 4 is at the center of this Psalm. Look at what (or rather, who) is at the center of verse 4. The “Son of Man” is at the center of it all! Hebrews 2:5-9, 1 Corinthians 15:20-28, and Ephesians 1:15-22 show that the “Son of Man” in Psalm 8 is Jesus. Jesus at the center of everything glorifies God! There is nothing that glorifies God like Jesus. Jesus is the glory of God. Is Jesus at the center of your life right now? Is he the one thing that drives everything? Is he before all things?

Pray:

Spend some time worshiping God for his glory in creation. Pray that God would be glorified in you. Thank God for how he is glorified in you because you are in Jesus and Jesus perfectly glorifies God. Pray that Acts 29 church plants and churches would seek the glory of God in Jesus above all else. Pray for fellow staff members (by name) to enjoy God’s glory and to glorify God, especially over the next few days together.

SEPTEMBER 12

Read:

Romans 12:3-8, “3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members,  and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”

1 Corinthians 12:12-31, “12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be?20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.”

Think About:

Q: What spiritual gift(s) has God given you for the common good and the building up of church planting in Acts 29?

Q: Who do you see on Acts 29 staff using their spiritual gifts?  How?

Q: What do you love and find enjoyable about your role?

Q: If you were tasked with leading you, would you find it enjoyable?

Q: In what way(s) are Acts 29 and our churches stronger and better because you were on the team this year?

Q: In what ways have you sensed the power, presence, and anointing of the Holy Spirit in Acts 29 this year?

Pray:

Spend some time thanking God for the spiritual gift(s) he has given you.  Do you need to repent of any jealousy of someone else’s gifting or God not giving you a certain gift?  Thank God for how he fits gifts together on a team for his mission, his glory, and our good.  Look around the room and pray for specific people, thanking God for giving them the gifts he has and that he would use them in more and more profound ways.  Pray for God to fill Acts 29 church plants and churches with gifted members, deacons, elders, and pastors.

SEPTEMBER 13

Read:

1 Cor 16:13-14, “13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 14 Let all you do be done in love.” I love those 5 things Paul tells them because they perfectly describe Jesus.

One, Jesus is watchful over all things as he sovereignly governs the universe. He is also watchful over you who are his because he is a good shepherd never losing his own, but always keeping, protecting, and leading you because you are his. He is not just watching from a distance, but interceding for you to the Father and present with you in the Holy Spirit.

Two, Jesus stands firm in the faith never wavering from the gospel he lived, died, and rose for. There is no changing, turning, shifting or wavering in Jesus because he is the same yesterday, today, and forever. This makes him trustworthy, believable, and dependable.

Three, Jesus didn’t just act like a man, but he became man- taking on flesh- that he could live the perfect life you can never live for you and die in your place the death you deserved to die for your sin. He died to make you righteous and lived to be your righteousness.

Four, Jesus is strong. Jesus stood strong against satan in the wilderness. Jesus stood strong against religious hypocrites. Jesus stood strong in the garden. Jesus stood strong on the cross. Nothing is stronger than Jesus’ resurrection where he triumphed over death- the final enemy. Jesus is ruling and reigning in total strength from his heavenly throne. Jesus will return in strength to make all things right.

Five, Jesus is love and is loving. Because God is love and Jesus is God, therefore Jesus is love. All Jesus is and does is rooted in perfect and total love for you- not some generic form of love, but a specific and particular love for you as you are right now (not some future version of you).

Think About:

Q: How have you seen Jesus be and do these five things Paul talks about?

Q: How quick are you to jump to making a passage about what you must do before considering the good news of what God has done and is doing in Jesus for you?  Why should we start with Jesus?

Q: Why are these five things Paul talks about sovital for church planters and pastors in Acts 29?

Q: How can you cultivate these things in your life and encourage them in others?

Pray:

When we read a passage like this, we’re quick to jump to what we have to do.  Now, James says that we are not to simply be hearers of the Word, but we are to be doers of the Word.  And this passage does have command verbs; act, stand, be, etc.  So it is good and right to consider what we are to do.  But before you jump to what  you should do, spend some time in prayer praising Jesus for who he is and what he has done.  Now pray for what the Holy Spirit will lead you to be and do in light of who Jesus is and has done from this passage.  Now pray this over your children (little or all grown up).  Pray it over your spouse. Pray it over your friends and those closest to you.  Pray it over the  pastor and elders of your church.  Pray it over the church planters and pastors all over the world in Acts 29.
