The Southeastern US is a growing, distinct region in the midst of considerable cultural shift. Once known as the “Bible Belt,” the Southeast is now more aptly described as “Christ haunted” as the number of those who are unchurched or dechurched continues to rise.
Once known primarily as rural, over 92% of the metropolitan areas of the Southeast are growing including three of the fastest growing cities in the US. Some projections suggest that by 2050 over 81.7 million people who do not know Jesus will live in the Southeast US. With this cultural shift comes tremendous opportunity for mission to both the dechurched and the unchurched.
To reach this Christ haunted, culturally shifting region, we need more healthy, gospel-centered churches planted and replanted. We need churches that both know and demonstrate the gospel in and to their communities. In fact, 1400 churches will need to be planted per year for the next 40 years to reach the increasing population. Acts 29 wants to play an integral part in the movement of God’s Spirit to see this happen by recruiting, assessing and developing church planters and pastors.
